Helfer was raised in rural Donalda, Alberta, Canada and was the daughter of Dennis and Elaine Helfer. Her heritage includes German, English. Swedish as well as Norwegian. She attended William E. Hay Composite High School located in Stettler. Her three sisters, Tammy, Tara and Trena were employed and resided on the farm owned by her parents. A modeling agency scout came across Helfer when she was 17 while she was standing in line for a movie.
